The city of Borba is the seat of the municipality of Borba, belonging to the district of Évora, which covers approximately 14,500ha and is made up of four parishes: Matriz (4,123ha), Orada (5,083ha), Rio de Moinhos (5,292ha) and São Bartolomeu (14ha).
The Municipality of Borba is located in Alentejo, in the extreme north of the District of Évora, facing the North and East with the District of Portalegre and the Municipality of Vila Viçosa, to the South with the municipalities of Alandroal and Redondo and to the West with the Municipality of Estremoz.
It is located in the Marble Zone, the name given to this sub-region of Alentejo, which has its own specificity given by the specialization of the economic activity that gives it its name: extraction and transformation of marble.
From the point of view of its geographical location in the context of the urban network, the city of Borba is in an equidistant position between two regional urban centers, which are Évora and Portalegre, and also Badajoz (about 50 km away from each of the centers), as well as the same distance from the Grande Artificial Lake of Alqueva.
The municipality is heterogeneous regarding the occupation of space. Thus, an area can be distinguished, to the north of the EN4, almost entirely made up of the parish of Orada, sparsely populated, and where agricultural activity predominates, with emphasis on vineyard cultivation and cereal crops. A central strip between the EN4 and Serra D'Ossa, covering the parishes of S. Bartolomeu, Matriz and almost the entire parish of Rio de Moinhos, where vineyards and olive groves predominate, combined with leguminous and extensive livestock farming. In addition to these agricultural crops, there is an important industrial activity linked to the extraction and transformation of marble. A southern area also appears, between CM 1042 and the municipality's limit, integrated into the parish of Rio de Moinhos, a mountainous area, practically unpopulated and where forestry activity predominates. It is particularly an area of cork oak forests and eucalyptus trees, also occupied by extensive cattle breeding that provides raw material for the important dairy activity in the parish of Rio de Moinhos, the main reason for the annual Borba Cheese Fair (at Easter) , already with a dozen editions, regional in scope, with the objective of promoting a regional product of excellence.
