Reza a lenda que o nome Ericeira significa, na origem, "terra de ouriços", devido aos numerosos ouriços do mar que abundavam nas suas praias. Die Legende besagt, dass der Name Ericeira ursprünglich "Land der Igel" bedeutet, aufgrund der zahlreichen Seeigel, die an seinen Stränden im Überfluss vorhanden waren. Neuere Untersuchungen deuten jedoch auf den Igel und nicht auf den Seeigel als Namensgeber hin. Mit der Entdeckung einer Kopie des alten Wappens des Dorfes, das sich heute im Archiv-Museum der Barmherzigkeit befindet, wurde bestätigt, dass es sich bei dem dort gezeichneten Tier tatsächlich um einen Igel handelt.

Tuttavia, ricerche più recenti indicano il riccio e non il riccio di mare come l'ispirazione per il nome. Con il ritrovamento di una copia dell'antico stemma del villaggio, oggi nell'Archivio-Museo della Misericórdia, è stato confermato che l'animale disegnato vi è in realtà un riccio.
