The antiquity of the occupation of this region is revealed by several megalithic monuments and by the Cabeço do Vouga, an important archaeological station located along the path of the Roman military road that went from Olissipo to Bracara Augusta.In the eleventh century, Águeda is already a prosperous village, with a developed commercial activity and a busy (river) port, supplying itself and the neighboring populations beyond Alcoba (today Caramulo). It is referred to, in documents from 1050 and 1077, both by its primitive name Casal Lousado (Latin: Casal Lousato) and by its Latinized given name: Anegia, Agatha and Ágada.
